A textile trip around the world – Part 1

Ikat – When patterns are created by magic

Anyone holding a genuine ikat fabric in their hand for the first time will wonder: how can such a fine, complex pattern look as if it is both sharp and slightly blurred at the same time?
The answer: Magic. Or at least almost.

What makes Ikat fabrics special?

Ikat is one of the oldest and most fascinating dyeing and weaving techniques in the world – found in countries such as Indonesia, India, Guatemala and Japan. In contrast to many other types of fabric, with ikat it is not the finished fabric that is dyed, but the yarn – before it is even put on the loom. To be more precise: certain sections of yarn are carefully tied (as in batik), dyed, tied again, dyed again… This is how the patterns are created in advance, through planning, patience and experience.

Only then is it woven – and the pattern appears piece by piece. Always a little imperfect, always slightly “blurred” – this is precisely what makes up the characteristic ikat look that can be found in fashion collections all over the world today. And, depending on the region, it has its very own cultural significance. In Bali, for example, certain ikat patterns are considered lucky charms, while in India they are status symbols.

Did you already know?

The term “ikat” comes from the Malay word mengikat, which simply means “to bind” – a reference to the elaborate wrapping technique.
And: some master weavers need weeks to produce a single piece. For a whole dress: months.

This can also be implemented on a small scale
